This work in 2 volumes deals with the human side of the GNR(I), by its own admission, leaving the "conventional history of the growth of a railway, with all the political and economic overtones" to Edward Patterson's work on that subject. Having said that, line diagrams of the prinicpal stations and gradient profiles of lines in the geographic area covered by the book are included. The author also gives an account of the principal features of each line. However, the primary text concerns staff, locomotives and train workings. Volume 2 looks at the part of the GNR(I) south and west of Portadown, but primarily in Northern Ireland, with the mainline south of Newry ignored and the only recognition of the GNR(I) in the Republic of Ireland being in relation to the line to Clones and Cavan and the former Castleblayney to Armagh line.
